A Home for Bugs

By Gabby Waltermyer

Stuck inside with a handful of kids? During this time, we all feel trapped inside, we forget that there is a whole world of fun just outside the doors of our castles. Getting yourself and the kids outside during these trying times is very important. Kids love being outside but sometimes they need direction and help with keeping entertained. As a parent there are many ways to reinvigorate the excitement of your kiddos outside. This activity will be perfect for your typical nature loving, bug loving child. Below are directions for a very fun scavenger hunt/ bug home making your kids can enjoy!

Scavenger Hunt List:

  • Rocks
  • Leaves
  • Sticks
  • Flower petals
  • Acorns
  • Pinecones
  • Woodchips
  • Dandelions
  • Bug (place in a jar)

Once your child or children have found all of the pieces listed in the scavenger hunt, have them begin to start building a mini home for the bug they have collected. They can use all materials they’ve found (you’re welcome to add items to the list). Once their bug home is created, they can place their new friend inside and wait for more friends to join the bug house.

This activity is great for exploring and interests’ kids in nature! It should be a good time filler and enjoyable for parent and kid. If your child is scared of bugs (like myself) no worries! There are other options that still keep the concept relatively the same. You can create fairy homes with these materials for another option bug free. Or home for action figures/dolls. There are no set rules for this scavenger hunt/build, as long as your child is having fun finding these materials and putting them together! Feel free to use hot glue or tape to keep homes intact. Enjoy this outdoors activity with your children and feel free to build a home with them!
