Let’s Get Lyrical!

By IYWP Mentor Victoria Peterson

This week at Longfellow, the students were given another challenging activity. After a very competitive came of Musical Chairs, we talked about how musical lyrics are poetry, and we challenged the students to write a poem that starts off with lyrics from a song. This experience showed how restrictions can inspire some of the most creative ideas.

A Longfellow Writing Club student shares her work.

One of my favorite poems was Olivia’s who was given the lyrics to “Let It Go” and turned it into a satirical story that contradicted everyone’s traditional opinion of the story in Frozen. It is very inventive and it had the whole class laughing.

Olivia re-writes “Let It Go.”
